Overview of Use: A very reputable Polymer manufacturing company Invista in South Carolina, needed to have the
ability to identify each box carrying polymer when the box enters and leaves the manufacturing building. In addition,
the company needed to weigh each box and automatically assign a box number with it weight.
Identified Problem: The process of manually tracking and registering boxes when they arrive at the warehouse takes
an average of one minutes per box. Further, the process requires a warehouse staff member to be available at the
entrance of the warehouse in order to register the product properly. In addition, the process of weighting a box of
polymer requires a warehouse staff member to scan a barcode, weight the product and assign the entry with its weight
on the WMS. Therefore, the company wanted to reduce the number of steps that are required to register and weight
each box in real time to reduce errors.
Solution: The RFRain solution involves assigning an RFID tag to every box during the packaging process. In
addition, the RFRain solution involves adding one reader at the entrance of the warehouse with one antenna. Hence,
each time a pallet of boxes enters the facility, the reader informs the company’s WMS through a JSON push
notification that boxes arrived at the facility. Finally, the process of weighing the process involved associating the tag
number with the weight by asking the staff to press on a button each time a box is placed on the weight station. In
effect, when a button is pressed the RFRain counting algorithm identify the box that sits in front of the weight station
and ignore other boxes that are read in the vicinity of the weight station. The data is then sent to the WMS through a
JSON push notification.
Outcome: The customer is very pleased with the installation. In effect, the simple but effective solution allows the
customer to automate the process of identifying when boxes enter the warehouse, and automatically assign a weight to
each box without incurring any errors in the process.
Technology Used:
Hardware:
Several RFR-RAIN-4-SMART reader with several options including alert and support for a counting algorithm.
Software:RFRain Rest API to allow the customer to scan on demand tags during the weight process.
Tags: RFRain provided one line of tags that is suited for material such as polymer, and has a range of 30 ft.
