Linen Tracking with RFRain RFID Solution
Overview of Use: A very reputable Linen manufacturer Revival, who distributes Linen to a variety of
hotels on New York, needed to reduce the number of Linen that are lost due to loss or damage on a
monthly basis. The main goal was to ensure that no Linen are lost on their way back from the Laundromat.
Identified Problem: It is a very time consuming task to count every Linen that leaves and re-enters the
hotel for a wash on a daily basis. Hence, Revival estimated a 2 linen loss per 1000 linen on a weekly basis,
which is the equivalent of a loss of $41,600 per year. Further, the hotel estimated that it took an average
of 8 hours a week to maintain an accurate count of the Linen, which resulted in a cost of $8,320 a year. In
brief, each hotel was losing an average of $50,000 per year on Linen and Linen maintenance. Worse, the loss
was forcing management to reduce the cost of each Linen, which directly affected the customer experience.
Solution: The solution involved tagging every linen with a Linen UHF RFID tag, which can withstand
temperatures above 150 C. In addition, we placed a 4 port antenna reader in the basement of the hotel.
Hence, each time a hamper is brought down to the basement to ship to the laundromat, a staff member
would place the hamper in front of the antennas. Using the built-in RFR-ZM-Mobile App, the staff member
choses the action such as checkout, and press start. After an average time of 20 seconds, the number and
type of Linen are automatically displayed on the screen. In addition, the data is automatically sent to the
RWS for auditing purposes.
Outcome: Using the RFRain Linen tracking solution, the hotel staff was easily able to count up to 1000
Linen leaving the hotel in a couple of seconds in order to track loss on a daily basis. This resulted in an 80%
reduction in the number of Linen that are lost due to item damage or misplacement. In addition, the staff
was able to ensure that the Linen are adequately rotated throughout the month to reduce Linen overuse.
Cost: The cost of the solution was estimated at $4,300 for hardware and tags, and $2,136 for software per year.
Savings: Around $37,280 per year, which varies by hotel. How much is linen and towel tracking costing
you per year.
Solution & Technology Used:
Hardware: RFRain installed an RFR-RAIN-4-SMART reader with 4 antennas on a wall of the hotel in the
maintenance area. The RFRain RFID reader has the ability to read over 1,000 Linen in a few seconds.
Software: The RFRain RFID reader comes pre-installed with the RFR-Zone Manager Mobile software.
Cloud Software: The RWS provides valuable data to the the staff such as the type of Linen, location,
time of detection, and Linen count after the Linen leaves or enter the hotel.
