Overview of Use: Volvo reached out to RFRain to implement a work in process installation inside their facilities. The goal was to track how long it took to assemble and build a truck on an assembly line using RFID.
Identified Problem: Management wanted to speed up the assembly line, but had a difficult time determining bottle
necks in the process using manual scanning with Barcodes. Hence, a more automated process was needed using RFID.
Solution: Volvo tagged every part using UHF RFID tags along with a magnet. RFRain installed overhead readers on
every entry in the assembly line using multiple readers. In addition, the Zone Manager UI software, which is
preinstalled on every reader, allowed the staff to observe the time it took to complete the process using overhead
monitors directly connected to the readers.
Outcome: Using RFRain’s smart readers with the pre-installed Zone Manager software allowed the customer to
implement a robot RFID work-in-progress implementation using only a dozen readers. There is no additional
software required, since the Zone Manager software reads, stores, and provides a UI to monitor RFID tags in real time
to meet the needs of the customer.
Technology Used:
Hardware:
RFRain installed several RFR-RAIN-4-SMART readers with 1 antenna at every entrance in the assembly line.
Software:
RFRain Zone Manager, which comes pre-installed on every reader.
